Kwoklyn Wan leads latest DMU Made Creative Industries workshop

Back for its third year, the DMU Made Creative Industries programme is designed to educate and inspire current DMU students and recent DMU graduates on the benefits of self-employment and freelancing in music, journalism, graphic design, podcasting and more.

Week 2 of our DMU Made Creative Industries workshop was with author, presenter and celebrity chef Kwoklyn Wan, aka ‘The Man with a Wok’, and focussed on creating content for YouTube. We had the great pleasure of having Kwoklyn inspire our students and recent graduates, giving advice on how he started his career and how this transitioned into becoming a presenter and influencer.

Kwoklyn said: “I’m here at DMU today to hopefully share what I’ve learnt over the past few years doing what I do.” He also added: “It would be great to pick a younger brain in order to see what I can improve and also to give them an element of what I am doing at the moment so to combine the two I guess.”

Charlie who is studying English with Journalism from DMU said: “I’ve attended this session today as I wanted to pick up a new skill along with content branding and it’s been phenomenal. Just meeting other students who are on the same page as me and sharing ideas has been great!”

In the workshop, the students were split into groups of two.  They were tasked to create an Instagram reel which promoted Kwoklyn Wan’s brand new TV show launching soon on Prime and/or his new website.

It was fantastic to see how each of the students came along and collaborated as a team to bring new ideas to the table. An added bonus was to see how much fun they were having whilst creating their content.

Kwoklyn said: “ The student engagement was fantastic today. It was great to see that they listened to what was asked of them and understood the task. For example, where and when the brand started to where we are now and it was nice to see in the two videos that were created, how one team specifically focused on the timeline for when my grandad came over in 1958 to the other team where they combined the latest trends with TikTok and the things that are happening now.”

To end the workshop Kwoklyn said he was very impressed with both the reels and that he will be posting them on his socials and use them as promotional videos. He most certainly made it personalised for the students and that made the students comfortable to ask questions.

During the Q&A session Kwoklyn said: “Learn as much as you can, be creative, pigeonhole yourself and if you fall, get back up and keep moving.”

Nidhi Agrawal an MA student from DMU reflected on the session, saying “the workshop was truly enriching. My biggest takeaway was the importance of authenticity within content creation, along with staying true to both our work place and ourselves.”

Future workshops include a session with Cool As Leicester’s Gabby Miller and Radio 1’s Calum Leslie.
