During the trip, you’ll visit the University of Girona, and its school, ‘ERAM’, to learn what life is like at a University in the heart of Europe. ERAM is a student exhange partner of DMU, where students can spend a year studying abroad.

There will also be free time, giving you the opportunity to explore this beautiful region within Spain. You may also want to take the 40 minute train to visit Barcelona.

Expect to make new friends, develop new skills and experience a stunning part of Europe!

Why take part?

Creative Industries in the UK are booming, and more than 47% of the job roles in this area are freelance.  That means, if you’re interested in working in a profession like performing arts, photography & video, graphic design or similar, you can expect to be self-employed at some point in your career.

During this unique trip, you’ll learn everything you need to know about being your own boss, from pricing and packaging services to marketing, social media and personal branding. It’s an invaluable and fun way to develop important new skills!

DMU Made is the part of Careers Team that helps students to understand what’s required within freelancing and self-employment, and the team will be on hand to support you in acquiring this knowledge.

Even if you feel you won’t be self-employed, entrepreneurial skills like idea creation, budgeting and marketing can be highly valuable within a job role – so the trip is relevant to you, whatever your ambitions are.

Learning objectives

Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of employability skills and competencies that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to Girona we expect that students will:

  • Become entrepreneurial.  If you’ve ever watched “The Apprentice” and thought the tasks look fun, you’ll love this trip!

  • Understand what is required to be self-employed.  What exactly is “freelancing” and how do you do it? You’ll find out.

  • Learn business skills like networking and pitching, which are valuable to you whatever you do in future.

Participants will take part in workshops before, during and after the event which are all relevant to developing entrepreneurial skills which can be applied within a future job role or within the participants own business ventures.

Cultural activities

Girona, Spain, is a cultural treasure trove nestled in Catalonia, offering a variety of enriching activities for every traveler. Students can walk through the Old Town, where narrow medieval streets, ancient stone buildings, and vibrant plazas invite exploration. Also, it is worth visiting the Girona Cathedral, famous for its grand staircase and the widest Gothic nave in the world.

Fans of “Game of Thrones” can join a filming location tour to see the real-life sets used in the series. For museum lovers, the Jewish History Museum in the old Jewish quarter explores centuries of Jewish life in Girona. Nearby, the Cinema Museum offers an interactive journey through the history of filmmaking. Art enthusiasts should not miss the Museu d’Art de Girona, showcasing religious and contemporary Catalan art.

Visa Information

Due to various external factors and an unprecedented demand for international travel, there are significant delays in visa processing, as well as very limited availability of application appointment slots for some countries and embassies.

We recommend that you take all appropriate steps to secure a visa as soon as practically possible, and to notify DMU Global if you face any issues. It is your responsibility to meet the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Failing to do so may mean that you’re liable for the costs incurred to the university (including repayment of the DMU Global bursary).
